Fangs (attack)
Fangs are a form of attack employed by some animals, monsters, and humanoids to cause damage. Fangs are long, pointed teeth used for biting and tearing flesh; in certain creatures, they are strong enough to break human bones. The mouths of creatures without sharp teeth are referred to as maws, while the jaw attacks of insects are called pincers. Birds attack using a beak, and horses, among other creatures, rely on bites.

Fangs are most commonly found in carnivores and omnivores, but some herbivores, such as certain species of bats, also possess them. They are primarily used to grip and kill prey quickly, as seen with large cats, whose powerful jaws enable them to hold their prey while others of their kind deliver the final blow. In omnivorous animals, such as bears, fangs are used when hunting fish or defending themselves, though they are unnecessary for consuming fruit. Some apes also have fangs, which they use primarily for intimidation or during combat.
Fangs are not only functional in combat but also serve broader roles in the behaviours and lore of creatures. Many predators and territorial creatures use their fangs as tools of intimidation, baring them to ward off rivals or threats without resorting to direct conflict. This behaviour is common among social animals and monsters alike, where the mere display of sharp fangs can deter challenges and establish dominance.
Humanoid Fangs
The short canines of humans and most demi-humans are not considered fangs. However, certain goblinish and orcish races possess effective fangs capable of inflicting significant damage. Despite this, these humanoids generally prefer to fight with weapons, which allow for greater damage and can be discarded or broken without consequence. As a result, they typically resort to using their fangs in combat only when no weapon is available.
In such cultures, the shape of an individual's fangs indicate their lineage, denoting their ancestral purity or connection to esteemed bloodlines. Fangs might even play a role in societal hierarchy, with larger or more distinctive fangs symbolizing strength, ferocity and suitability for leadership. This could influence an individual's chances of ascending to roles such as sub-chieftain or chieftain within a clan. A chieftain with imposing fangs is often viewed as a figure of fear and respect, their physical traits reinforcing their authority and dominance over the clan. Conversely, those with less pronounced or poorly shaped fangs may face ridicule or diminished standing, relegating them to lower societal roles or outcast status.
In some cases, fangs may be ritually modified to signify status or achievements. Filing, sharpening, or inlaying fangs with precious metals or stones could serve as a sign of a warrior’s victories, a leader’s conquests, or even a mystical blessing. Such modifications might also be part of initiation rites, marking the transition from adolescence to adulthood, or the assumption of a leadership position. These practices further tie the significance of fangs to social, cultural, and spiritual identity.
Fangs might also be used in rituals of legitimacy. A new chieftain may be required to prove their heritage through the examination of their fangs by elders or shamans, ensuring they possess the traits deemed essential for leadership. In some traditions, defeated rivals might have their fangs removed as a trophy or to symbolically strip them of their claim to power.
Beyond physical appearance, the myths surrounding fangs often includes mystical elements. Some cultures may believe that fangs carry the essence of their ancestors or the favour of their gods, imbuing the bearer with strength, courage, or divine guidance. Leaders with particularly impressive fangs might be thought to channel the spirit of legendary heroes, further cementing their place at the top of the social hierarchy.
