While holding a spell, the caster remains as vulnerable as they are during the casting process, unable to react to their surroundings or benefit from dexterity bonuses to their armour class. This vulnerability must be weighed against the potential advantage of timing the spell's discharge perfectly, which can be critical in certain situations.
The mental and physical effort required to hold a spell is not without limits. The caster can hold the spell comfortably for a number of rounds equal to their constitution score. Beyond this, each additional round requires the caster to make a constitution check. If this check fails, the caster succumbs to exhaustion, causing the spell to collapse and be lost. This limitation reinforces the importance of timing and strategic use of this ability.
Unlike full spells, cantrips cannot be held in this manner. Their simpler and more immediate nature does not allow for the same degree of delay between casting and discharge.
Discharging
Causing a spell to manifest physically, past the magic's weaving, is referred to as "discharging," the moment when the spell is released from within the spellcaster. Once discharged, the spell's effects become real and cannot be undone or retracted.
The act of discharging a spell requires 1 action point. A spellcaster cannot begin casting or discharging another spell or cantrip in the same round that a spell or cantrip is discharged. This limitation applies to all magical actions, meaning that two cantrips, or a spell and a cantrip, cannot be cast or discharged within the same round. This ensures that the act of releasing a spell demands the full focus of the caster, reinforcing the careful timing and planning required for effective spell use.

When a spellcaster gains a new spell upon reaching a higher level, it is assumed that the groundwork for learning that spell has already been laid through prior training and instruction. Over time, the caster has retained fragments of teachings, advice and demonstrations from their mentors, though these lessons may not have fully resonated or crystallised in their understanding. Upon achieving a new level, the spellcaster experiences an epiphany — a moment of clarity in which these previously obscure teachings come together. They finally grasp the structure and essence of the new spell, unlocking their ability to prepare and cast it.
This process represents a natural progression of the caster's growing mastery, as their expanded comprehension allows them to wield more complex or potent magic. The acquisition of a new spell is not random but the culmination of years of effort, insight and latent potential finally realised.
