Mordenkainen's Tortoises are rare and highly prized reptiles, renowned for their genius-level intelligence and deep connection to the arcane. These remarkable creatures are descendants of an egg that was crafted and hatched by the ancient wizard Mordenkainen in the 10th century. While it is often said that the tortoises are domesticated, it is perhaps more accurate to describe them as semi-domesticated creatures — those who earn their respect through understanding, patience and arcane prowess.

The bond between these tortoises and their caretakers is not one of simple ownership, but rather one of mutual respect. The tortoises do not easily submit to authority; rather, they choose to offer their allegiance to those they deem worthy. This respect is typically given to those capable of hatching the animal from its egg, as it is believed that the first moments of life with the tortoise are crucial in shaping the creature’s loyalty. These tortoises are highly intelligent, often displaying problem-solving abilities and magical aptitude that far exceed that of normal reptiles. Their knowledge is often seen as a blend of arcane wisdom and natural lore, making them valuable companions for wizards and scholars alike.

Though few in number, Mordenkainen's tortoises are considered symbols of wisdom and power, and their presence often commands great respect in magical circles. They are incredibly rare, with most specimens being kept under the care of reputable mages, who carefully guard the secret of the tortoises’ origins. Their intelligence and connection to Mordenkainen's legacy make them highly sought after, and they are regarded as more than just pets — they are living relics, embodying the ancient wizard's arcane mastery.

Advantages

In addition to being highly defensive and capable of dealing effective damage in combat, Mordenkainen's tortoises possess a dweomer akin to that of a paladin, granting them continuous protection from malevolence. This magical aura surrounds the tortoise, extending outwards by two combat hexes, and any friend of the tortoise within that radius enjoys this protective effect. Naturally, the dweomer moves with the tortoise, allowing it to advance, retreat or employ its single attack as it chooses.

The tortoise's jaws are able to snap so quickly that it always gains initiative against its enemies. Additionally, the tortoise's neck can stretch, providing it with the reach necessary to attack creatures up to two hexes away, provided they are directly in front of the tortoise (within a 60-degree arc). Because the snap is so quick, there is no chance for enemies to attack the tortoise's momentarily exposed neck.

Behaviour

If raised from an egg, the tortoise must be communicated with and taught how to generate its magical dweomer, or else this power will have to emerge naturally over time. A spellcaster with the appropriate spell, or a paladin possessing the ability to speak with animals, can teach the tortoise within 3–12 days. During this period of instruction, both speak with animals and protection from malevolence spells must be cast (a paladin need not cast the latter) each day of instruction. If not taught, the tortoise will acquire this skill within a year.

Typically, after hatching, it requires four months before the tortoise can snap with its full power (add 1d4 per month of growth). The ability to reach a further target will take 5–8 months to acquire.
