Speak with Animals
Range self
Duration 5 rounds per level
Area of Effect 1 animal
Casting Time 1 round
Saving Throw none
Level cleric (2nd); druid (1st)

Empowers the spellcaster to speak directly to natural creatures of animal to semi-intelligence. The caster is able to ask questions, receive answers and generally be on amicable terms with the animal. The caster must be within 40 ft. to speak with the animal, in order that animal and druid can understand the gestures and sounds of the other.

Note, however, that the animal’s knowledge is limited to the location of things; things that are dangerous or threatening (or friendly); and things which do, or do not, like the animal and its kind. Greater knowledge than this is not available.

The spell does not allow communication with creatures without intelligence, such as many insects or soft-bodied species; nor does it allow communication with fantastic creatures such as basilisk, catoblepas, cockatrice, manticores, chimera, hydras and the like.

However, animals thought to be extinct, such as the sabre-toothed tiger, the baluchitherium or the titanothere are included.
