Multiple attacks describes a creature or character's ability to attack multiple times in the same combat round. While there are numerous monsters with this potential (too many to list here), on the whole the benefit of multiple attacks for a character is something only enjoyed by fighters, paladins and rangers.

At the start of their careers, these classes fight at a rate of "one attack per round," written as "1/1" on the table shown. However, as experience and levels are gained, the prowess of these classes increases, allowing them to make multiple attacks in the same time frame.

Advance to Multiple Attacks

The first improvement takes place at 4th level. From that point on, the character is now able to make "five attacks every four rounds," written as "5/4." This works so that when a combatant with multiple attacks enters combat, during the first three rounds the fighter, paladin or ranger is able to attack just once each round, as normal. With the fourth round, however, the character gains two attacks and rolls TWO attack dice.

While normally an attack requires 2 action points (AP) to perform, when the character gains their "double-attack round," this expenditure is reduced to just 1 AP per attack.
