Dampen (cantrip).jpg

Dampen is a cantrip that inundates a small space, thoroughly soaking everything within. Even items inside a container or other receptacle will become saturated, if that receptacle is caught within the spell's reach. This can smudge regular ink, and cause other forms of damage; however, magical potions, scrolls and spellbooks are impervious to the cantrip. There's a chance that objects may incur water damage and develop mold if not allowed to air out within an hour.

Dampen
Range 10 ft.
Duration until evaporated
Area of Effect 1 cub. yard
Casting Time 2 action points
Saving Throw none
Level cantrip

Cast upon a normal fire, every crevice and surface within the wood or coals, as well as the area where the fire is burning, is made wet, extinguishing the flames. This takes place within 2-5 rounds, with a 50% reduction in the fire's intensity each round. Lanterns, torches and candles so affected are immediately snuffed out.

When exposed to the air, the dampness evaporates within 5-20 rounds, significantly faster than it would take water to normally disappear (about 12 minutes or so in warm conditions). The cool moisture offers relief to those suffering from heat in balmy or hotter conditions.

In frosty or colder conditions, the abrupt wetness leads to intense shivering and potential hypothermia if characters do not promptly remove their wet clothing. If a constitution check is unsuccessful, dampened characters suffer a -1 penalty to their attack rolls and a -2 penalty to their damage rolls for a duration of 4 rounds.
