Gaze reflection offers protection against creatures whose attack includes a paralysing or petrifying look, such as medusae, basilisks or catoblepas. Eye contact with these creatures normally requires a saving throw; but the gaze protection spell can be cast quickly enough that it protects the caster automatically — so long as the caster isn't surprised.
