Shillelagh enchants a wooden club so that for the duration of the spell, it becomes a magical weapon. As the druid casting the spell gains experience levels, the shillelagh has the potential to be an instrument of great power.

Initially, the shillelagh gains a +1 to hit, without a bonus to damage. However, though the wooden club that's transformed formerly caused 1-6 damage, once it becomes a "shillelagh," it causes 2-8. This weapon continues to be light enough to use one-handedly.
For every four levels the caster attains above 1st (i.e., at 5th, 9th, 13th and so on), the shillelagh gains an additional +1 to hit. Thus, at 13th level, the shillelagh would attack with a +4 to hit.
For every three levels the caster attains above 1st (i.e., at 4th, 7th, 10th and so on), the shillelagh also causes an additional +1 damage. Thus, at 13th level, the weapon would cause 2-8 +4 damage on a hit.
The shillelagh grants these benefits, as well as being a magic weapon, only when handled by the caster. However, once transformed by the spell, the shillelagh can be used as a non-magical weapon causing 2-8 damage for the spell's duration.
Once the weapon has successfully hit an opponent once per level of the caster, the shillelagh reverts to being a club. An ordinary shillelagh can also be transformed by the spell, reverting to its non-magical form when the last permitted hit is made.
