Gadfly (cantrip).jpg

Gadfly creates a horse-fly that can appear up to 10 ft. from the caster, which can then travel 10 ft. further from that point and bite one creature. The damage that's caused by the bite is 1 hit point; no roll to hit is necessary.

Gadfly
Range 10 ft.
Duration 1 round
Area of Effect 1 creature
Casting Time 2 action points
Saving Throw none; see text
Level cantrip

In addition to damage, when the gadfly attacks an animal or beast, there's a 3% chance per caster's level that the creature will fly into a rage, buck and try to throw its rider. If this happens, the rider will need to make a save vs. poison in order to remain seated. Characters who have amateur knowledge in the mount being ridden, or who have progenitors who were knights, outriders or teamsters, gain +3 to this saving throw.

The cantrip reflects the famous event when Bellerophon, astride upon the first pegasus, attempted to ride to the home of the gods atop Mount Olympus ... and when "Pegasus" was stung by a gadfly, Bellerophon was thrown off and fell to his death.
