Yawn is a cantrip that compels the targeted creature to involuntarily open its jaws and stretch these parts three times, over the space of 1 round (12 seconds). Creatures are allowed a saving throw; if this fails, the creature is unable to make any attacks during the current round, nor the subsequent round thereafter.

For example, a lion affected by the cantrip would be forced to abstain from attacking entirely in the first round while it stood there yawning; and then it would be able to attack or defend itself with only its two claws the round thereafter.
There is no relationship between the yawn and the desire for the creature to sleep; creatures affected by the cantrip aren't made sleepy, and aren't drowsy in any sense afterwards.
The cantrip has the additional value of detaching creatures that attack using the jaws to crush victims, or drain their blood. As the jaws widen, any creatures that are held prisoner are free to escape — or, if stunned, can be pulled free by others.
Note that the cantrip has no effect upon creatures without mouths in the traditional sense, such as jellies or shambling creatures.
