The Kodar mountains are located east of Lake Baykal within the Transbaykal range of mountains, stretching across the region of the same name in Siberia. The range includes some of the boundary between the empires of Trakkatch Dran (norker) and Vostoch (hobgoblin). The mountains are known for their scenic beauty, with rugged terrain, pristine lakes and diverse flora and fauna. The region is extremely remote and has very rarely been seen by humans.

During the Palaeolithic Period, within the Kodar Mountains there appeared an Astral Gate, the Kodar Gate, between Outer Earth and the Prime Material Plane. Numerous generations of humanoid races, including bugbears, ogres, orcs, hobgoblins, goblins and xvarts would appear through the gate and settle in lands throughout northern Asia. The gate would persist for thousands of years, drastically changing the course of human history, until it was closed by the great god Ymir.
