The amateur character begins with the fitting of metal armour to the individual, while able to make rivets, plates and replications of existing armour, using examples from the work of authorities.  It's not until reaching that degree of knowledge that the character's able to make metal armour from wrought metal, whatever is available ... but that that time the whole panoply of metal armours are available: ring, scale, chain, splint, banded and plate armours can all be made.

Metal armour is a sage study in the field of Metalwork, mastering the creation of personal metal armour from puddled metals for humanoids and animals, using a forge, hammer and anvil. Includes slight skills in woodworking in the making of helmets and shields.

The amateur character begins with the fitting of metal armour to the individual, while able to make rivets, plates and replications of existing armour, using examples from the work of authorities. It's not until reaching that degree of knowledge that the character's able to make metal armour from wrought metal, whatever is available ... but that that time the whole panoply of metal armours are available: ring, scale, chain, splint, banded and plate armours can all be made.

As the individual increases his or her knowledge, understanding of how to work with more complex metals becomes available. The use of mithril and adamantium represents a tremendous thrust-forward in the character's thinking, enabling the creation of crude magically-affected items. From here, it's possible for the character to break the boundaries of what's possible, creating previously inconceived objects of unfathomable power.

Sage Abilities

The sage abilities below are those acquired by a character through the study, according to status.

Amateur Status

  • Refit Armour: enables adjustments to be made to existing armour, so that it can be made to fit persons up to 20% larger or smaller than for whomever the armour was originally fitted.
  • Repair Armour: allows the character to replace broken parts of existing armour, using a forge and ordinary iron or bronze metals.

Authority Status

  • Build Armour: using a forge, enables the hammering and molding of metal armours, including shields, helmets and suits, from wrought iron or bronze.

Expert Status

  • Mithril Armour: using a forge, enables the creation of +1 magical armours from wrought mithril. Does not enable the founding or puddling of mithril metal.

Sage Status

  • Adamantium Armour: using a forge and additional tools, enables exploration into the host of magical armours that might be construction, from +2 varieties to other forms offering unusual additional protections.
