Creak produces a harsh scraping sound of metal upon metal, or wood upon wood. The sound resembles a door opening on rusty hinges, a hanging sign squeaking as it moves in the wind or wooden slats giving way as there is a gentle shift of weight.

The sound has the potential to be a distraction for those who hear it, as the resonance is both piercing and grating. It will be assumed that something has moved nearby, without the sound of a footfall or breathing. Therefore, probably a threat, sneaking up on the listener. The practical result will be a -2 to the listener's initiative, if a saving throw isn't made.

The cantrip can also be used to permanently affect a hinge or a joint, such as that of a door, so that it will creak every time the joint moves. This creak can be cured with 8 ounces of lubricant.
