Bind (spell).jpg

Bind creates a collection of magical restraints that constrains affected creatures, rendering them immobile and somewhat vulnerable, provided they fail a saving throw vs. magic. Victims are able to thrash and strain against their bonds, so that they retain their armour class and aren't helpless, but they're unable to make attacks. The caster can blindfold or gag recipients bound by the spell.

Bind
Range 40 ft.
Duration 2 rounds per level
Area of Effect 1 creature per level; see text
Casting Time 1 round
Saving Throw negates
Level mage (2nd)

Though able to affect one creature per level, the binding depends on the caster being stronger than the creature's being held. To help with this, the caster counts his or her strength at +4, so that a mage that normally has a 10 strength would count as having 14. Creatures with a strength greater than this adjusted number have a 1 in 4 chance of breaking free each round. If a bound creature is attacked, the spell is weakened — so that in the following round, the creature has a 1 in 2 chance of breaking free, even if the creature is stunned.

Held creatures are subject to reaction rolls to things they are told while bound, enabling the caster and others to explain and negotiate. Despite the bound creature's predicament, it always remains possible that reason and wisdom might carry the day. Not every creature that's bound need become a revengeful, raging enemy merely because the caster dared impose the spell.
