Reveal approach is an authority-status sage ability in the study of Heightened Senses that permits a character with sufficient hearing that any creature attempting to use [[Stealth (sage ability)|stealth, regardless of their ability, cannot approach more closely than the number of combat hexes equal to the experience levels possessed.
Thus, if the character with this ability is 5th level, then any creature coming within 5 hexes would immediately become known. This same ability reveals creatures laying in wait for the character as well.
However, note that the ability in no way preserves the character from being surprised, nor does it have any influence on the character's initiative once the approacher is detected. These things are resolved as in any other stealth-approach situation.
