Unlock is a cantrip that manipulates the internal tumblers of a mechanical lock, guiding them into the correct positions for the lock to release or close. With most medieval locks, when opened the weight of the lock causes it to pop open, so that it hangs from it's shank; when closing a lock, it usually has to be held closed before the cantrip is employed.

The dweomer therefore allows easy access into ordinarily locked objects; in dire situations, the spell could be used to rapidly lock a door when making a swift exit. Imaginably, the caster may forego the necessity of possessing a key to a given lock, or the lock even having a keyhole, so that it couldn't be opened without a cantrip. Possibly, such a lock could be fashioned to close and lock automatically without a key.

Additionally, a lock used in tandem with the fire trap spell could be fixed to a bag — one that was, say, filled with black powder — and then opened using the unlock cantrip at the right moment. Obviously, the cantrip's range is a consideration in such a case.
