Hides & skins is a sage study in the field of Leather Work, including the treatment and process underlying the transformation of skins and hides into leather, including skinning, tanning, tawing and the making of parchment. Hides and skins have been utilised by humanoids for thousands of years, due to their durability and flexibility.

Hides are defined as the untreated skins of animals that have been removed during the process of butchering. They vary in size and thickness, depending on the animal; hides include those of cattle and horses.

Skins refer to the outer coverings of animals, ofte including fur, hair or wool. Skins can be used for their natural texture or treated to create leather. Skins originate with pigs, goats, sheep, deer, lambs, rabbits, seals, alligators and snakes, among others.

Sage Abilities

The sage abilities below are those acquired by a character through the study, according to status.

Amateur Status

  • Tanning: gives an understanding of preparing hides, skins and pelts, removing hair, flesh and other unwanted substances.
  • Trapping: involves the capture of wild animals using various devices or techniques, such as pre-existing traps, snares or cages. The ability is primarily used for the purpose of pelt or skin harvesting.


Authority Status

  • Finishing Leather: Incorporates skills related to dye application, surface treatments, stretching and folding, among other processes.


Authority Status

  • Mystic Leather: Describes the enchantment of leather, in preparation for the creation of magical items and armour made of leather.
