Found in grasslands and savanna ranging through the center of Eurasia, from the Sahel to the Mongolian steppe, the warthog has even been known to verge upon the edges of deserts south of the Sahara and in East Africa.

Warthogs are aggressive when attacked, gaining a +2 bonus for all attacks, increasing its natural THAC0 to 16. Despite this, the warthog prefers to run if it can, as most of its predators are fast-moving creatures such as leopards and cheetahs. Warthogs can run at a cost of 1/8th action points (AP) per hex for a distance of 200 yards.

The warthog has two sets of tusks, a lower set and an upper set. The lower pair becomes razor sharp as the warthog reaches maturity, from rubbing against the upper pair every time the mouth is opened or closed. The tusks can reach a length of 10 in. long and are valuable as a low-grade ivory.

When mating, male warthogs compete for sows at the beginning of the wet season. Once a mate is chosen, the male will remain with her through the gestation period, up to six months; during half the year, then, at least two warthogs will be found together. During the other half, the young will remain with a close female group, with 3–4 females surrounded by 4–16 children. The male group will typically consist of 2–8 males, who will be within a quarter mile of the female group.
