Theatrical costuming is a sage study in the field of Textiles, comprising a style of dress peculiar to the performance of theatre or opera, to contribute to the fullness of the artistic, visual world that is imaginatively created. The primary goal is to visually enhance storytelling through using clothing and accessories to help define characters, establish time periods and settings, and contribute to the overall mood and atmosphere of the production.

The study combines artistic expression, historical knowledge, practical sewing skills, and a deep understanding of character and narrative. Costumers contribute significantly to the audience's understanding of character and narrative, helping to transport the imagination to different worlds and time periods through the clothing worn by performers on stage.
