Magic Mouth
Range 10 ft.
Duration until discharged; see below
Area of Effect 1 object per level
Casting Time 1 round
Saving Throw none
Level bard (2nd); illusionist (2nd); mage (2nd)

Empowers a chosen object with an enchanted mouth which, when triggered, suddenly appears and speaks the message which it has been charged to speak. The object will itself appear to develop a mouth and so it will appear that the object is speaking.

The trigger must be specified by the caster. This trigger may be that the object is touched, picked up, passed by, struck in some fashion, kissed, breathed upon, etc. Commands can be general or specific as desired: “Speak only when an octogenarian female carrying a sack of groat clusters sits crosslegged within five feet.”

The distance for the mouth to be triggered cannot be greater than 5’ per level of the caster; thus, if cast by a 6th level mage, the mouth cannot be triggered from a distance greater than 30’.

The total message cannot exceed ten words per level of the caster, which must be spoken over a period equal to one round (12 seconds) per caster’s level.

The mouth can be placed on living things, so long as these things are fixed, such as a tree or a flower. However, if the object containing the magic mouth is itself destroyed, the mouth is dispelled … so more permanent features such as rocks or stone walls are preferable.

The mouth cannot speak magic spells, but it can cause certain magics to be triggered where a sound or a key word is needed.

The caster cannot create more mouths than he or she has levels, one mouth per day until the allotment is achieved. The caster can, however, cause an existing mouth to be dispelled regardless of the distance between the caster and the mouth. The undesired mouth simply ceases to be.
