Message (spell).jpg

Message is a spell that enables the caster to send a private message to a listener within the range of the spell. The caster must know that the recipient is within the spell range, and naturally must know the recipient's identity (a general message cannot be sent to random persons).

Message
Range 240 ft. + 40 ft. per level
Duration 5 rounds per level
Area of Effect receiver
Casting Time 1 round
Saving Throw none
Level bard (1st); mage (1st)

It's not necessary for the caster to see the recipient or even to know the precise direction required. The message is not limited by geography or physical obstructions; it may pass freely through rock, water or other material, and may be sent into the ethereal plane.

The length of the message may not exceed 20 words per round — though a player character may request the use of a timer if they feel they can do better than this speed. The recipient, upon receiving the message, is empowered to give a "yes" or "no" answer in response, which will be heard by the caster. No other persons, except the caster and recipient, will be able to hear the message. It will be evident to an observer of the caster, however, that a spell is being employed.
