Gods (sage study)
Gods is a sage study of the field of Theology & Customs, giving knowledge of the most powerful entities in the universe. These are beings whose power is so great that they are nearly omnipotent or omniscient, formly and beyond the influence of a worshipper's belief. Gods exist outside the construct of what's called "existence" — even outside of the physical presence of the outer planes.
For the most part, the Gods don't have names ... though they are sometimes given such by mortals, who often mistake the Gods for demi-gods. The most familiar names for the Gods originate with Christianity and Islam, who use the names "Yahwah," "Jehovah" and "Allah." More ancient names include Shiva, Isis and Anath. References to the "Old Gods," notably of the Cthulhu mythos, are a part of the study, as these beings possess no form within the construct of existence. Other Gods also exist which are unknown to the people of Earth.
Agenda
Since the Gods are unknowable, unlike demi-gods, their study pertains more to the discovery of truth than with forms of personal communication. The Gods aren't concerned with the petty actions of mortals or demi-gods, but with the "immortal plan," which sets out to adjust the meta-reality of existence. It's possible this plan could be revealed to a lowly disciple, but this is something that would be achieved only by "the blessed" — those who have studied reality at great length and earned the God's goodwill.
The Gods are said to have three aims: the ascendency of belief, or Theism, over personal aggrandisement; the defeat of ignorance through knowledge, or Deism; and the acceptance of Pantheism, that reality is identical with divinity. These are elaborated by the Gods through small acts that cause great events; through revelation that brings power to "the blessed"; and appreciation that great power is achieved through unity, sharing and sacrifice.
The sage abilities below are those acquired by a character through the study, according to status.
Amateur
- Define Morality: gives the character perfect knowledge of whether a circumstance or action is right or wrong.
- Guidance: seeks direction and purpose through the power of meditation and prayer.
- Judge Belief: defines the piety of others.
Authority
- Argumentation: redirects the course of action of an earthly authority through discourse, in accordance with guidance received from the Gods.
- Religious Teaching: enables the education of others in religious sage abilities possessed by the character.
