Melt transforms ice and snow into free-standing water, which will spread out, run away, or seep into the ground as the location dictates. The purity of the water depends on the cleanliness of the ice from which it was transformed.

The shape of ice or snow affected may be as the caster wishes, so long as the actual volume conforms to the spell. Lake or pond ice can be melted and made thinner. The top of a large sheet of ice can be melted to create an area that's slippery. An icy wall can be melted in order to provide purchase for a climber. However, an area beyond the spell's range cannot be affected.

When cast against creatures possessing characteristics associated with cold, such as white dragons, ice toads, winter wolves or remorhaz, the spell causes 2 hit points damage per level of the caster. A saving throw will reduce this damage by half. The spell has no effect against undead.

Reverse

Freeze will cause water to become ice. The resultant ice will be 108.6% of the original water's volume, so that any container except stone that is holding the water will be broken and split as the transformation occurs. The spell can be used as a bridge to cross a water surface, or to freeze a door solid if it is drenched in water first. Water thrown over a flat surface can be frozen and thus, again, made slippery. The duration of the ice will depend on the animate temperature.
