Click to enlarge. Shows latitude 72.51 to 82.34 north, including Jotunheim and the Dandanmoth Islands (the land of Humutya), with the extreme northern tip of Biyetia. These are lands that have been reinvented for my game world. The obscurity of these lands in the 17th century allows me to settle them with Jotunheim's frost giants, Biyetia's goblins and the unknown denizens of Humutya — withheld for the day when my players have a reason to go here.
The northern passage between the Barents Sea and the [1] is choked with ice in nearly every month of the year, impassible for most ships of the period. Without sufficient magic, a journey as far north as Humutya would be infeasible. For two months of the year, August and September, small whaling vessels, strong enough to endure the ice and ride over it (a larger, heavier ship would be crushed), can be found in these waters. No doubt, a frost giant ship, made of Siberian timbers and perhaps stone, might be strong enough to endure the ice and would make a memorable adventure. A small goblin ship in the Kara Sea could be tempting for plunder.
Orange lines indicate 30°E (top left), 60°E (center) and 90°E (top right). Thus, the top left of the map is directly north of St. Petersburg and Cairo, while the top right is north of India. Hexes are 20 miles in diameter. Numbers on the left and right indicatge distance from the North Pole in hexes.
