Talk:Mosses & Ferns (sage study)
Maxwell (talk) the druid in my game took this study as his first specialty. when he was picking, I came up with some ideas for abilities so he would have more idea of what this study would lead to. any of these strike you as worth incorporating? I had these pegged as authority-status.
- Vermifuge (expel parasites from hosts, inspired by this fern and a few others)
- Staunch Wounds ( I originally thought of this as Bind Wounds, but allowing the use of foraged mosses instead of bandages; a lesser effect would just be that it is possible to bind the wounds using mosses at all, *without* the advantages of the Bind Wounds ability, but at least saving you from needing to buy bandages -- ferns are free)
- Create Terrarium (not sure what it might do ... a mild relaxation/calming effect?)
- Moss Lawn (cultivate large areas of moss for a refined aesthetic; improves the value of gardens and other green spaces; possibly gets you hired by landowners)
- Harvest Peat (for making whiskey? for making certain magic items, similar to mistletoe?)
Tao alexis (talk) Look at you, creating work for me out of thin air. On the whole, I think the names are good, but the abilities need more punch. With staunch wounds, I'm reminded of the film, The Horse Soldiers, in which moss is used to stop gangrene. Disease doesn't often arise from wounds, as we don't roll for it; but necrosis is a thing in my world. I think this might be a good counter to that. I have an idea for terrarium ... but the issue with these things is that they have to be physically grown by the character, which would take months or years. These are not spells. I'll look up some of these things and try reworking them right now.
Tao alexis (talk) Okay, I've added a few abilities from your list, changing as needed; I can't see the value of a moss lawn (though it fits into other abilities) and harvesting peat is easy enough; I don't wish to restrain other characters from without the ability performing the practice. Some better moss-focused ability is needed. I'll go on thinking of some application for it.
