Bind is a spell that conjures a set of magical restraints that seize and hold affected creatures in place, provided they fail a saving throw vs. magic. The dweomer fixes the victim’s limbs and posture, preventing meaningful movement while allowing limited struggling. Bound creatures retain their armour class and are not treated as helpless defenders, but they are unable to make attacks or employ actions that require freedom of motion. The caster may also impose additional restraints as part of the binding, including blindfolding or gagging those affected.

Bind
Range 40 ft.
Duration 2 rounds per level
Area of Effect 1 creature per level; see text
Casting Time 1 round
Saving Throw negates
Level mage (2nd)

The spell may affect one creature per level of the caster, but its effectiveness depends upon relative physical force. For the purpose of maintaining the bind, the caster's strength is treated as four points higher than its actual value. If a bound creature's strength exceeds this adjusted total, it has a 1 in 4 chance each round to break free through force alone.

The dweomer is sensitive to interference. If a bound creature is attacked, the integrity of the binding is compromised; in the following round, the creature gains a 1 in 2 chance to escape, regardless of its strength, even if it is otherwise impaired or stunned. Continued assault increases the likelihood that the restraints will fail altogether.

Though immobilised, bound creatures remain aware and capable of response. They may be addressed, questioned or reasoned with, and are subject to reaction rolls in response to what is said to them. The spell does not compel obedience or alter disposition; it merely imposes restraint. It is therefore possible, even under these conditions, for negotiation or persuasion to influence the outcome, rather than violence or reprisal.
