Shield is a spell that creates an invisible, mobile barrier that moves in front of the caster, offering protection against melee and ranged attacks. Unlike a physical shield, this arcane defence does not need to be held, allowing the caster full use of their hands while benefiting from its protection. The shield dynamically shifts to intercept incoming strikes, reducing their effectiveness regardless of whether they come from the front, the flank or rear.

An armour class (AC) of 4 is provided against all direct hand-to-hand melee attacks. The shield's AC is 3 against hurled missile weapons, like an hand axe or spear; and the caster is AC 2 against fired weapons, like a bow, crossbow or sling.

The spell also provides some protection against area-effect spells and natural abilities, such as a fireball or a breath weapon — a +1 bonus to saving throws against these effects. Additionally, magic missiles are completely negated, turned aside by the shield so that they are wasted against its defence.

The shield is weightless and does not interfere with the caster's movement or ability to cast spells. However, it is not a physical object and cannot block solid projectiles or be used to provide cover for others. It remains an invaluable defence for spellcasters, offering a reliable protection against both mundane and magical threats while leaving them free to manoeuvre without the burden of conventional armour.
