Tenser's floating disk is a spell that conjures a circular, concave disc capable of hovering up to a height of three feet above the ground. Resembling a shallow bowl with a three-foot diameter, this enchanted disk possesses the ability to transport a variety of objects or individuals at the caster's command. It can accommodate everything from people to liquids, with no inherent capacity to distinguish or segregate different items. Furthermore, its coloration can be customized as desired.

Tenser's Floating Disc
Range 20 ft. +5 per level
Duration 2 hours +1 per level
Area of Effect 200 lbs. per level
Casting Time 1 round
Saving Throw none
Level mage (1st)

Once conjured, the disc obediently trails the caster, faithfully following their every movement within the spell's designated range. It maintains a leisurely pace, akin to a slow walking speed, capable of covering up to 10 hexes per round in a deliberate manner.

However, the disc can only glide horizontally when travelling. It cannot climb steps on it own or other vertical surfaces. However, the material of the disc can be unloaded and "portaged" over obstructions; the empty disc can then be physically "carried" up a slope or flight of stairs, which takes little difficulty, as the weight of the unloaded disc is but 10 lbs. Once placed again, it can be reloaded and travel may continue.

The disc offers no defense against the elements. To safeguard transported goods from rain or snow, an additional tarp or covering is necessary, the weight of which must be accounted for in the disc's carrying limitations. The disc does not increase size as its weight potential increases; and however much is stacked upon it, the load will never appear to be more than three feet wide and two feet high. In this way, the disc acts like a bag of holding, shifting material at the bottom into an alternate, undefined plane of existence.

Personal Use or Transport

Although the disc can serve as a makeshift seat or resting spot, its inherent instability makes it unsuitable as a battlefield platform for combat. Smaller individuals or pets might find it comfortable enough for a nap or a short rest.

The disc can also be used to move persons — carefully — in a horizontal manner at the disc's normal movement rate, but such persons must remain still during this transport. As explained above, at high levels a potentially large number of such persons may be moved, each "fitting" on to the disc despite their actual shape and bulk.

Origin

Tenser of Stirling was a sage of science and a magus born in Scotland in the year 1509 of the clan Erskine. Though known to be mad as a hatter, he became the chief sorceror in the court of James V at the age of 30, continuing in that position under James VI. Both recognized Tenser's unmatched prowess in the arcane arts, and his counsel became an integral part of the king's decision-making process. In 1561, Tenser founded the Edinburgh University of Thaumaturgy. He died at the Battle of Langside in 1568, supporting Mary Queen of Scots.
