Sticks to Snakes is a spell that transforms inanimate wooden objects, such as twigs, branches, torches and spears, into venomous snakes that obey the caster's commands. To qualify, an object must be primarily composed of wood and fit within a "stick-like" form, meaning it must be no thicker than 1 inch per 18 inches of length. Objects smaller than 18 inches or living plants are unaffected. The caster may prepare a bundle of sticks in advance, ensuring they have material to transform. If a stick carried by an enemy is transformed, the sudden change can surprise the carrier with a 3 in 6 chance. If successful, the newly created snake attacks immediately with a +4 to hit bonus, striking before it can be dropped or knocked away, particularly if it emerges from a backpack or another concealed location.

Once transformed, the snakes move three hexes per round and attack as 1 hit dice creatures, each with 4 hit points. Their hardened scales provide an armour class of 4. A successful bite deals 1–2 damage and injects toxic venom, causing 8 additional damage unless a save vs. poison is made. A successful save reduces this additional damage to 1 point.

Reverse

The reverse of the spell, snakes into sticks, transforms up to 1 hit die of snake per level of the caster. Each snake is entitled to a saving throw vs. magic. When the spell's duration ends, snakes revert to their original form.
