Span (spell)
Span is a spell that conjures a bridge of humble appearance, stretching between two solid anchor points. The bridge's design varies, shaped to appear hastily built, weathered or makeshift, as though constructed by ordinary hands rather than master builders. However, its function is far superior to its form — regardless of its appearance, the bridge is completely stable and can bear weight without risk of collapse.

Once the spell is cast, it cannot be dismissed at will by the caster; the magic is too strong and must remain until its natural duration expires or its supports are destroyed.
The bridge may be up to 1 foot wide per caster level, spanning the distance between any two solid points. Though it may appear fragile — missing planks, frayed rope or weathered wood — it supports up to 4 tons at a time. Carts and wagons roll smoothly, animals find their footing without difficulty and melee combat can occur upon it without increased risk of falling.
By altering its visual condition, the caster can discourage pursuit, giving the bridge a dangerous, decayed appearance. Enemies might hesitate to cross, assuming it to be unstable or impassable, even for riders and vehicles. However, should anyone attempt to use it, the bridge functions just as well for them as it does for the caster.
If one hundred points of damage is dealt to either anchor point, the structure will fail, causing the bridge to vanish instantly. Any person, creature or object resting upon the bridge at that moment will plummet as the span ceases to exist.
