Horned devils, also Malebranche, are powerful and malevolent devils from the Nine Hells, serving as enforcers and soldiers in infernal hierarchies. Towering in stature, they are fearsome to behold, with muscular, humanoid bodies, leathery bat-like wings and a long, barbed tail. Their heads are adorned with sharp, curved horns that sweep back in an imposing display, reinforcing their role as both warriors and emissaries of terror.
In combat, horned devils are brutal and efficient. They wield heavy, flaming forks, striking fear into their enemies while inflicting grievous wounds. Their tails are equally dangerous, tipped with a barbed stinger that can deliver a devastating blow. The combination of strength, speed and infernal cunning makes them formidable opponents in battle, capable of holding their own even against experienced adventurers.
They primarily dwell on the 6th layer of Hell, known as Malbolge, within the Nine Hells of Baator. Malbolge is a desolate and rocky expanse, characterized by steep crags, endless slopes of jagged stone and immense chasms. It is a place of unrelenting hardship and torment, perfectly suited to the horned devils' brutal and imposing nature. As enforcers of infernal law and soldiers of hellish armies, horned devils are often found carrying out the will of powerful devil lords who rule over Malbolge and the other layers of the Nine Hells. They enforce order through fear and violence, maintaining the rigid hierarchy that governs devilkind. While Malbolge is their primary domain, horned devils are not confined to this layer. They can be found across the Nine Hells, summoned to other layers or sent to the Material Plane as agents of their masters, executing the schemes and designs of greater devils.
Malbolge, with its treacherous and unyielding landscape, reflects the harsh and authoritarian nature of the horned devils themselves, serving as a fitting home for these terrifying enforcers of the infernal realms.
