The caster may create any 2 dimension image desired, with no depth whatsoever. Those who view the image are entitled to a saving throw, or else they will know what it is — but the two d’lusion will remain visible.
Common images would be an apparent hole, a mirror, a screen to conceal creatures, etc. Note that if the image is of the same nature as the background, it is less likely to be detected as an illusion. The image may be vertical or horizontal.
Note that the cantrip is more powerful as a misdirection than as an illusion intended to be directly viewed.
