Buryatia (kingdom).jpg

The Kingdom of Buryatia is a haruchai realm extending over a large region southeast of Lake Baykal in eastern Asia. It's a vast and diverse region characterised by extensive steppeland, mountains and forest. The kingdom includes two ogre-populated "orkhanates," or enclaves, Agin Buryat and Yablon. Nearly all of the region's area is administered by the Khanate of Buryatia. Together, the ogres and haruchai represent a formidable foe in the region.

Buryatia covers an area of 347 hexes, with a population of 310,223.

Geography

In the west, the Sayan Mountains rise with rugged grandeur, their alpine terrain featuring deep valleys, dense forests, and a labyrinth of rivers and streams. These mountains, encompassing both the Eastern and Western Sayan ranges, invite adventurers to explore their pristine beauty.

Southward, the land undergoes a gradual transformation, with the mountains giving way to plains and lowlands meeting the Selenge River, which originates in Mongolia and flows northward into Buryatia. The southern regions of the realm are replete with pristine forests and untouched wilderness. The Selenge flows through this land and feeds into Lake Baykal, a huge freshwater body known for its crystal-clear waters. A great delta has formed where the river meets the lake, defined by intricate branching of the Selenge River into multiple channels. The delta wetlands are extensive and rich with birds and other fauna.

The large city of Ulanna is situated not far from the delta, which serves as a conduit for trade between east and west. Eastward from the city extends an open steppe that serves as an agricultural resource for the kingdom, reaching eastward to the great khanate of Uighur-Khitai.

History

Little is known of the region's past. In the 13th century, Buryatia joined with the Mongol Empire, contributing to the armies that marched into the west. By the late 16th century, the present kingdom emerged after the disintegration of the old Mongol Empire. Leading up to that time, the region purged Buddhist influences from its culture and continues to embrace shamanism as a spiritual tradition.
