Reading Tides (sage ability)

Reading Tides is an amateur-status sage ability in the study of Oceanography, granting a deep understanding of tides, currents and eddies along sea and lake shores, derived largely from observation and an intuitive sense of the water's movement.

The ability allows the character to assess falling and rising tides near the shore, taking into account the time of year, lunar cycles, wind patterns and other environmental factors. This practical knowledge is invaluable for activities such as sailing, boating and fishing, offering insight that would be difficult to gain without years of experience or formal training.

Furthermore, the character is able to identify optimal conditions and locations for fishing. A rising tide that presses against the mouth of a bay brings an abundance of baitfish, which in turn attracts larger catch, creating the best opportunities for a successful haul. The character can discern not only the ideal time of day for fishing but also the precise location to cast their line or nets based on the shape of the shoreline, the movement of the water and the habits of local marine life. However, it is important to note that while the ability enables the character to locate fish, it does not impart any special skill in catching them. Amateur anglers, however, add an additional +1 to their primary die, giving a +2 bonus in shore and +3 upon the ocean.

Reading tides also provides a vital edge in ensuring personal safety when swimming or navigating shorelines. By understanding how riptides, undertows and dangerous currents behave, the character is able to avoid hazardous areas that might trap or overwhelm an unwary swimmer. Whether identifying the subtle signs of a rip current in the pattern of breaking waves or gauging the strength of an undertow by feeling the pull of water underfoot, the character's knowledge reduces their risk of accidents in open water.

The character's observational skills enable them to make on-the-spot decisions about tide timing, the influence of wind on water movement and the behaviour of currents over varied terrain. This is critical for sailors and boaters navigating unfamiliar waters, allowing them to choose safe routes, avoid grounding in shallow areas or use favourable currents to their advantage. Similarly, the ability to predict high and low tides could assist in managing cargo or timing landings, ensuring that boats can safely approach or leave shorelines.
