Rattle creates a collection of sharp knocking sounds resembling items shaking or striking repeatedly off-rhythm, such as a chain being unwound or the sound of dice in a cup. The bones of animated skeletons are often described as "rattling," and often it's this sound that's suspected upon hearing the cantrip's effect.

On account of the last, the cantrip causes a shiver of fear to take hold of one recipient, who will be the only one to hear the produced sound. The effect is so powerful that, unless a saving throw is made, the individual will be put off kilter, lowering their armour class by 4 points. This effect lasts for one full round of combat.

The cantrip can also be used to permanently cause the wheel of a cart or wagon to rattle as the vehicle moves along. This has a 2 in 3 chance of causing the wagon's drive to stop and investigate, creating an opportunity for ambush. The rattling sound can be cured with 8 ounces of lubricant.
