Knock (spell).jpg

Knock is a spell that compels the opening of any door, gate or portal that was constructed to open, regardless of obstruction. It will release a stuck door, disengage mechanical locks, overcome a held effect and force open portals that are barred from the far side. The spell does not affect a wizard locked door, which remains sealed against it.

Contents

When discharged across an area 10 ft. square, the spell reveals and opens any concealed or secret doors within that space, whether or not the caster is aware of their presence. The magic recognises the function of the structure rather than its visibility, causing hidden seams, panels or pivoting stones to yield as if they had been plainly found and manipulated.

Once the spell is set in motion, its effect persists. For the next hour, or until the caster has reached the number of openings permitted by level, the caster may continue to compel additional portals to open without recasting the spell, provided each lies within reach of the effect as it is applied.

Limitations

The spell does not create openings where none exist. Solid walls, collapsed passages or any structure not intended to function as a portal remain unaffected. Likewise, if a doorway is obstructed by debris or physical blockage beyond the door itself, the spell may release the door but cannot clear what lies beyond it.

Knock operates without regard for consequence. If a portal is trapped, the trap is triggered as the door is forced open. If pressure is held behind the door — water, sand or other material — the spell will release it, often with sudden and dangerous effect. The magic compels the opening; it does not moderate what follows.
