Flaming Sphere (spell).jpg

Flaming sphere is a spell that conjures a floating globe of normal fire, ranging in size from that of an orange up to one foot in diameter. The sphere burns anything it contacts, capable of igniting flammable materials and causing 2-8 damage to creatures it touches. It radiates intense heat; creatures within proximity will instinctively move two hexes away if able, abandoning attacks if necessary.

Flaming Sphere
Range 10 +5 ft. per level
Duration 1 round per level
Area of Effect 1 ft. diameter sphere; special
Casting Time 1 round
Saving Throw items must save vs. normal fire
Level mage (2nd)

Neither the caster nor allies are immune to the sphere's effects. The fire is entirely real in its heat and contact, and will burn any creature it touches regardless of allegiance. The caster alone is not compelled by the sphere's presence; he or she may stand adjacent to it, move freely beside it or even occupy the same hex without being driven away by its heat. This indifference is not protection. Falling into the sphere, being forced into it or allowing it to pass through one's own hex results in the same injury. The caster's control extends only to directing the sphere's movement, not to negating its effect.

Movement

The caster may direct the sphere one hex in any direction by spending 1 action point (AP). The sphere may be cast directly into an occupied hex, dealing damage upon arrival. Thereafter, striking additional targets can be difficult unless creatures are stunned or otherwise unable to avoid it. If not directed in a round, the sphere remains where it is.

The sphere may move freely in any direction, including vertically, for the duration of the spell.

Effect on Objects

Any object touched by the sphere must make an item saving throw vs. normal fire. Flammable materials such as paper, cloth or thin wood will ignite on a failed save. Non-flammable materials are still affected: porcelain and pottery crack, glass shatters, and heavy wood scorches and blackens.
