Shillelagh (spell).jpg

Shillelagh is a spell that enchants a wooden club or shillelagh, transforming it into a magical weapon for the duration of the spell. The effectiveness of the shillelagh increases as the druid gains experience levels, allowing it to become an instrument of greater power in the hands of a skilled spellcaster.

Shillelagh
Range touch
Duration 1 hit per level
Area of Effect one club
Casting Time 1 round
Saving Throw none
Level druid (1st)

Once transformed, the wooden club deals 2-8 damage (2d4) on a hit and gains a +1 to hit bonus. However, no additional damage bonus is applied beyond this enhancement. The weapon remains light enough to be wielded one-handed, preserving its ease of use in combat.

The shillelagh grants these benefits only when wielded by the caster. The weapon cannot be used by another; if it's let go, dropped or fumbled, the magic is lost and the weapon reverts to its natural form.

The spell's effect is further limited by the caster's level — once the shillelagh has performed the number of hits indicated by the caster's level, the dweomer ceases, and the weapon returns to its ordinary, non-magical state.

As the caster's experience level increases, the shillelagh grows in power:

  • For every four levels above 1st (i.e., at 5th, 9th, 13th and so on), the shillelagh receives an additional +1 to hit. At 13th level, the weapon would attack with a +4 bonus to hit.
  • For every three levels above 1st (i.e., at 4th, 7th, 10th and so on), the shillelagh also gains an additional +1 to damage. At 13th level, the weapon would deal 2-8 +4 damage on a successful strike.
