Recognise Heavens is an amateur-status sage ability in the studies of Astronomy & Astrology and Natural Astronomy, that grants the character a deep knowledge of the celestial sphere, allowing them to accurately identify individual stars, constellations, nebulae, planets, asteroids, meteors and comets. With this ability, the character understands the precise movements of the sun and moon, enabling them to track their cycles and seasonal variations. Observation may be conducted with the naked eye or, when available, with the aid of a telescope, enhancing their ability to study distant celestial bodies.

The character is also proficient in the use of a sextant, an instrument that allows for precise measurement of celestial positions, which in turn enables them to determine latitude and longitude anywhere on the earth. This skill makes them invaluable in navigation, particularly at sea or in uncharted lands where landmarks are scarce.

In astrology, this ability grants a complete and accurate understanding of which celestial bodies are in which house when charting a horoscope. This makes the character an authority on astrological predictions, giving them insight into omens, divine portents and astrological influences over individuals or events.

Timekeeping

Through careful observation of the sky, the character can maintain an almost flawless sense of time, using the position of the sun, moon and stars to track the hour. This allows them to determine the time to within 15 minutes, both during the day and at night, provided the sky is visible.

Additionally, the character can identify the precise day of the year, recognising seasonal markers, the phases of the moon and recurring astronomical events. With this knowledge, they can predict meteor showers, monsoon arrivals, the correct time for planting and harvesting, and other important climatic patterns. Such foresight makes them highly valuable in agrarian and nomadic societies, where precise seasonal knowledge can determine survival.

Beyond its practical applications, this ability holds great significance in uncivilised or isolated regions where celestial knowledge is viewed as mystical or divine. A character who demonstrates an understanding of the heavens — correctly predicting eclipses, charting planetary movements or foretelling astronomical events — may earn the respect of local shamans, tribal leaders or religious figures. In encounters with isolated communities, this ability may grant the character a status of authority, potentially opening avenues for negotiation or even veneration as a sage or prophet.
