Identify Artifact (sage ability)
Identify Artifact is an amateur-status sage ability in the study of Artifacts (study) which enables the character to determine, from close examination of an item (where it may be done at leisure), whether or not a given magic item is potentially an artifact. The knowledge extends to the probability that the object has an ego or special powers, but does not identify what those powers are or allow the character to communicate with the item. In fact, no special knowledge of the item is given, unless the item happens to be one about which the character has studied.
This ability serves as a crucial safeguard for adventurers and scholars, ensuring they can accurately discern whether an item is merely magical or something far more potent and dangerous. The primary value lies in its capacity to eliminate uncertainty — confirming definitively that an object is not an artifact. This clarity can prevent unnecessary fear, over-caution or misplaced ambition when dealing with powerful items. Artifacts inherently possess unique characteristics that mark their creation and the imprint of their ego, subtle clues perceptible only to those with the training to interpret them.
Artifacts, by their very nature, are enigmatic and often perilous. They are imbued with powerful egos that influence their appearance, aura and interaction with the world. A character with this ability perceives these qualities as faint but unmistakable signs: a resonance in the material, an unnatural luminescence or a disquieting sense of purpose radiating from the object. This recognition does not extend to understanding the artifact's function or communication with it; rather, it is an acknowledgment of the artifact's distinct otherness.
In cases where the item is confirmed to be an artifact, the character will also discern that it is magical, though no further specifics about the nature of its magic or its capabilities are revealed. The amateur status of this ability limits the depth of understanding but offers a foundation for further investigation. Should the character continue their study, they may gain the means to unlock deeper knowledge about artifacts, their origins and the intricacies of their power.
This ability is especially valuable in scenarios where parties encounter relics of uncertain origin. Whether venturing into ancient ruins, handling items taken from an adversary or examining heirlooms passed down through generations, the ability to distinguish an artifact from an ordinary magical item prevents dangerous missteps. It also opens avenues for the character to provide critical insights to their companions, framing their actions with a greater awareness of the risks and opportunities at hand.
