Geography

The region is hilly and covered in a dense deciduous rainforest. The Indravati river basin forms a central plateau that creates a well-watered plain south and west of the city of Bastar. The remainder of the subahdar is notable for undulating upland rivers and gullies with dense spongy bottoms.

History

The Subahdar was established around 1324 under the tutelage of a local goddess, Danteshwari, who is the protector of the Bastar State. The region has been peaceful, having been ruled by six successive Devas, heavenly rulers who are considered to be gods once ascending to the throne.
