Delicate metalwork is a sage study in the field of Metalwork, providing skill at making and repairing jewellery, engraving, stonesetting, precision tools and other metal forms requiring a fine and meticulous mastery. Unfortunately, the study gives no special knowledge on how to sell or make value from an object once its created.

The study enables two approaches to the creation of metal objects. The first would be the creation of difficult to find mechanical objects designed to measure and reveal, such as scales, calipers, astrolabes and telescopes, each of which could obtain unusual properties in the hands of a creative character, who went past the standardised form of these tools.

The second benefit would be the transmutation of valuable metals and stones into even more valuable objects of enormous beauty and worth, to decorate a person or home. The creation of jewellery and jeweled objects is an art form, one that would not only cost a great deal to pursue but which could also presumably making the creator rich ... if the work were good enough.

A third benefit arises from the combination of these two. There are numerous magical items, necklaces, amulets, diadems and such whose manufacture would require precision and loveliness. We acknowledge that these things, also, would become part of the skill-set of the precision toolmaker.

To create these objects, a character would need to accumulate a host of exact tool's, a safe and secure place to work (since the materials laying about would prove a marvelous score for a burglar), a good workbench and tools, plus time. Lots of time.

Sage Abilities

The sage abilities below are those acquired by a character through the study, according to status.

Amateur Status

  • Make Jewellery: gives skill in the creation of ordinary-quality jewellery items such as belts, chains, earrings, fobs, pendants and pins. Enables the crude implementation of stones without comprehension of precise lapidary.
  • Silversmithing: provides knowledge of silver and less valuable metals, their characteristics and special difficulties, in relation to the making of tools and jewellery.

Authority Status

  • Fine Jewellery: enables a complete understanding of all jewellery and its forms, with the character gradually progressing from the creation of "fine" jewellery to that which is "highly crafted."
  • Goldsmithing: allows complete knowledge of gold and more valuable metals, as well as their alloys, in the creation of jewellery pieces.
  • Lapidary: allows the professional setting of both stones and gems into all sorts of objects, including jewellery, household items and even weapons.
  • Telescope Making I: a discipline enabling the character to manufacture effective mounted telescopes.

Expert Status

  • Excellent Jewellery: enables the character to progress into the making of "excellent" jewellery, increasing his or her skill until "brilliant" work can be produced.
  • Superior Precision: enables various improvements on whatever precision tools the character creates.
